Friday, September 2, 2005: Gimme Some o' That...
On Friday I accompanied my friend Bridget Irish (from my art school days) to the “K Temple” to see a band called Old Tyme Relijun, for a CD release party. I'd never heard of them before I got to Olympia. But they had excellent little letterpress posters, which I'd seen around town a few days before. And Bridget swore by them. Good enough for me. And in any case, I was looking forward to my first Calvin Johnson sighting. So anyway, we walk in the door, and the first thing I hear is “Brian Frye.” Took me a minute to place her (longer hair), but I recognized Jamie Peterson, who Luis Recoder introduced me to 5 years or so ago at the Kiss Party in Williamsburg. Hadn't seen her since. And had no idea she was even a musician. But as it turns out she was the drummer for Old Tyme Relijun. And excellent. As was the band. I recorded the show, which included an opener, and a short set by the tweener daughter of a member of OTR and her friend (the Old Ladies) on the Edirol R-1 I just bought for movie-making. A nice guy from Santa Cruz, Nicholas, who records a lot of shows, was interested in it, and we ended up chatting for a bit. And he gave me PBRs. Always a plus in my book. Here, Jamie's pictured talking to an admirer, who went home with a broken drumstick. Apparently, “That happens when you buy the cheap ones.” Birthday suggestion, maybe?
After the show, I went to the Reef (King Solomon's Reef, my favorite Olympia restaurant) for a grilled cheese. Kat was working. Here she's talking to a nice man, who apparently is involved with high school football in some way. He told her all about the Tumwater team, in excruciating detail. I let him have my potato chips, which I like, but can never finish.
So, then I went for a drink at the Voyeur. And ran into Nicholas again. He was there to hear a band, the Nerve. Who were also good. I started recording them too, but shortly ran out of beer. Left the recorder with Nicolas and went for another, when I ran into Karly & Aaron (pictured), Sandra, and others. Who I'd met the night before (same drinks, different table). Holly introduced me to her friend Amy at the Brotherhood, then Amy took me to the Voyeur, and presto. Also ended up talking to a very nice guy named Brantlee (unusual...), who I felt bore a striking resemblance to my brother Mikey. Beer or truth? You decide.
